YACHT CHARTER ITINERARY

Sail to Monaco & Italian Riviera

Compact distances and a coastline where refinement feels intentional.

About This Itinerary

5 Days in Monaco & Italian Riviera

This itinerary works because of scale. Distances are short, navigation is straightforward, and ports are closely spaced, allowing flexibility without pressure. The coastline alternates between engineered harbors and quiet headlands, making it possible to balance access with privacy. Historically, this stretch of coast has always catered to movement — traders, fishermen, and later, leisure travelers. Today, arriving by sea remains the most coherent way to experience it, revealing how towns were positioned in direct response to the shoreline.

Day 1 - Monaco to Cap d’Ail

5 NM

Begin in Monaco and immediately step away from density. Cap d’Ail sits just west of the principality, its coastline shaped by limestone cliffs and small coves that offer shelter from prevailing winds.

Historically, this area served as a natural extension of Monaco’s harbor, used by fishermen long before leisure craft. Anchor near Mala Beach, where steep rock walls create privacy despite proximity to land.

The water deepens quickly, maintaining clarity and cooler temperatures. This first day is deliberately short, allowing time to settle and reset after embarkation.

Dinner aboard keeps the evening composed, with city lights visible but distant.

Day 2 - Cap d’Ail to Menton

10 NM

Cruise east along the coast toward Menton, a town shaped by its unique microclimate. Protected by mountains to the north, Menton remains warmer in winter and cooler in summer, supporting citrus cultivation rare elsewhere in France.

Lemons became the town’s identity, once exported across Europe. Even today, citrus trees line promenades and gardens.

Anchor offshore where possible, enjoying calm water and open exposure. The town itself is compact and walkable, with pastel buildings rising gently from the sea.

Menton feels slower than nearby ports, its rhythm influenced more by climate than commerce. The evening is best kept understated, allowing the town’s scale to remain intact.

Day 3 - Menton to Portofino

25 NM

Cross into Italy and follow the Ligurian coast toward Portofino. This coastline is narrow, with steep hills that force towns to develop tightly along the waterline.

Portofino’s harbor is naturally small, which has limited expansion and preserved its proportions. Historically a fishing village, its sheltered cove made it a reliable stop long before its reputation grew.

Arrive early to secure space or anchor nearby. The water is clear but deep, and the surrounding headlands provide shelter.

Portofino rewards timing and restraint. Engaging briefly preserves its elegance; overstaying diminishes it.

Day 4 - Portofino to San Fruttuoso

5 NM

A short cruise south brings you to San Fruttuoso, accessible only by boat or hiking trail. The bay is framed by forested hills and opens onto a small pebble beach.

At its centre sits a 10th-century Benedictine abbey, originally founded to house the remains of Saint Fructuosus. The abbey’s position reflects medieval priorities: isolation, access by sea, and natural protection.

Anchor offshore and swim in water cooled by shade and depth. Just below the surface rests the submerged statue of Christ of the Abyss, placed here in 1954 as a memorial to lost divers and sailors.

San Fruttuoso feels timeless, untouched by roads or expansion.

Day 5 - San Fruttuoso to Monaco

30 NM

Depart early for the return west. Pause for a final swim stop along the Ligurian coast if conditions allow.

The final leg is practical and unhurried, allowing time for arrival and disembarkation without pressure. The compact nature of this itinerary ensures the journey ends as it began — measured, balanced, and intentional.
