YACHT CHARTER ITINERARY

Sail to the Ionian Islands

Green islands, sheltered waters, and a pace shaped by protection rather than distance.

About This Itinerary

6 Days in Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands sit along Greece’s western coast, separated from the mainland by narrow channels that create naturally protected cruising grounds. Unlike the Aegean, winds here are lighter and more predictable, and the surrounding hills keep seas manageable even in high summer. The islands are notably green due to higher rainfall and fertile soil, a legacy of Venetian rule that introduced olive cultivation on a wide scale. This combination of shelter, clarity, and short distances makes the Ionian ideal for guests who value time at anchor over time underway.

Paxos

Day 1 - Corfu to Paxos

25 NM

Depart Corfu and head south toward Paxos, a small island carved from limestone and surrounded by steep, pale cliffs. According to local mythology, Paxos was created when Poseidon struck Corfu with his trident to form a private refuge.

The island lacks large towns, which preserves its quiet character. Anchor along the western coast, where sea caves and arches have been shaped by constant wave action. The water here is exceptionally clear, reflecting light upward into the caves.

Paxos feels deliberately understated. Evenings remain calm, with little artificial light. This is a place to slow down immediately.

Day 2 - Paxos to Antipaxos

5 NM

A short morning cruise brings you to Antipaxos, a small, uninhabited-feeling island known almost entirely for its water. The seabed is pale sand, which enhances the turquoise color and makes swimming feel effortless.

Antipaxos has long been used for seasonal agriculture and viticulture, rather than permanent settlement. Vineyards still sit above the beaches, producing small quantities of local wine.

Anchor close to shore and spend the day swimming and floating. There is little reason to move once settled. The simplicity of the place is its defining feature.

Day 3 - Antipaxos to Lefkada

30 NM

Cruise southeast toward Lefkada, one of the few Greek islands accessible by bridge. Its western coast is dramatic and exposed, but the eastern side is calm and well protected.

Historically, Lefkada was a strategic outpost due to its position along mainland shipping routes. The sheltered channel allows smooth navigation regardless of conditions offshore.

Anchor near Nydri or further south, where wooded hills and small islets break up the water. Lefkada feels grounded and functional, offering a subtle shift from the purity of Antipaxos.

Day 4 - Lefkada to Meganisi

14 NM

Meganisi sits just east of Lefkada and remains largely agricultural. The island is deeply indented with coves that offer excellent shelter, which is why it has long been used by local sailors as a natural harbour.

Anchor in one of the narrow bays where cliffs and trees create near-total protection. Swimming here is calm and private, with little current and minimal traffic.

Meganisi’s villages are small and unhurried. Evenings are quiet, defined by fading light rather than activity.

Day 5 - Meganisi to Ithaca

20 NM

Cruise south to Ithaca, long associated with Homer’s Odyssey. While the historical accuracy of the legend remains debated, the island’s enclosed bays and rugged terrain align closely with descriptions of isolation and return.

Anchor in a protected harbour where hills rise steeply from the water. Ithaca feels introspective — less polished, more inward-facing.

The island’s scale encourages walking rather than planning. Time slows naturally here.

Day 6 - Ithaca to Kefalonia or Return North

25 NM

Begin the final leg either toward Kefalonia or back north, depending on disembarkation plans. Kefalonia’s coastline is more dramatic, with deeper water and limestone cliffs.

The day is kept practical, allowing the journey to conclude without pressure. The Ionian’s value lies in how easily it accommodates calm endings.
