YACHT CHARTER ITINERARY

Sail to British Virgin Islands

Short crossings, clear water, and anchorages that reward unhurried days.

About This Itinerary

5 Days in British Virgin Islands

This itinerary is built around what the BVI does exceptionally well: you can keep daily distances modest and still experience places that feel completely different from one another. You begin close to Tortola for an uncomplicated first afternoon, then move east to Virgin Gorda for The Baths, a National Parks Trust site defined by massive granite boulders and narrow rock corridors that open onto small beaches. Mid voyage, the route shifts to Anegada, the outlier in the chain. Unlike the other main islands, it is a low lying coral and limestone island, and its surrounding Horseshoe Reef is recognized as one of the largest contiguous coral reefs in the Caribbean. That geography changes both the mood and the navigation, which is exactly why it belongs in a short itinerary. You finish in the west at Jost Van Dyke, where White Bay offers a simple final anchorage and the option of a short hike to the Bubbly Pool, a natural tidal pool that becomes active when the surf funnels through the rocks.

Day 1 - Tortola to Norman Island

6 NM

Begin in Tortola and keep the first leg intentionally short, so the day feels like an arrival rather than a transfer. Settle into The Bight at Norman Island, then use the afternoon for your first swim and an easy tender run. If conditions suit, snorkel at The Indians, a group of rocky islets known for clear, shallow water and marine life that tends to stay close to the structure. Dinner works best on board tonight, with the anchorage doing most of the work.

Day 2 - Norman Island to Virgin Gorda

15 NM

Cruise east toward Virgin Gorda and aim to arrive early enough to visit The Baths before the busiest part of the day. The site is managed by the National Parks Trust and is defined by large granite boulders that create shaded passages, pools, and small coves along the shore. Afterward, return to the yacht for a late lunch and a quieter afternoon at anchor, or reposition to a calmer overnight spot depending on wind and swell.

Day 3 - Virgin Gorda to Anegada

19 NM

Today is the moment the itinerary changes character. Anegada sits low to the water because it is formed from coral and limestone rather than volcanic terrain, and its surrounding reef system is extensive, which is why local knowledge and careful pilotage matter. Once anchored, the afternoon is deliberately simple: a long swim, time on deck, and a short drive inland if you want contrast. Flamingo Pond lookout offers a quiet view over the salt ponds that support birdlife, including flamingos.

Day 4 - Anegada to Jost Van Dyke

25 NM

Depart Anegada with enough time to arrive at Jost Van Dyke before late afternoon. Settle at White Bay for a swim and an easy stretch ashore. It is a classic stop, so arriving earlier tends to make the anchorage feel more relaxed. If you want a shore plan that feels different from beach time, consider the Bubbly Pool hike: a short walk to a natural tidal pool that comes alive when swell and tide align.

Day 5 - Jost Van Dyke to Tortola

10 NM

Begin with an early, comfortable return to Tortola. If timing allows, pause for a final swim stop on the way back, then continue into port for disembarkation. The last day is kept practical by design, so packing, rinsing down gear, and wrapping the trip feels calm rather than rushed.
