YACHT CHARTER ITINERARY

Sail to Costa Rica

Warm bays, forested headlands, and a coast shaped by calm.

About This Itinerary

6 Days in Costa Rica

This six day yacht itinerary traces a composed route from the Papagayo Peninsula to the Gulf of Nicoya, designed to keep distances purposeful while revealing Costa Rica’s Pacific in layers. You begin at Marina Papagayo, a naturally protected harbor that makes an elegant staging point, then cruise south along the Nicoya Peninsula through the Catalina Islands, the quieter curve of Samara Bay, and the protected landscapes of Cabo Blanco. The experience is defined by pacing. Shorter passages allow time for what matters: morning swims before the day warms, snorkeling when visibility is at its best, and long lunches that linger without schedule. Shore experiences are woven in with restraint, from a regulated turtle beach visit in season to a guided forest walk where the sounds of the canopy replace conversation. Curated by Atlantis Sail, each day prioritizes the right anchorage for comfort, the right window for conditions, and the kind of quiet access that lets Costa Rica feel personal rather than performed.

Day 1 - Marina Papagayo to the Catalina Islands and Flamingo Bay

25 NM

Begin at Marina Papagayo, set within a naturally sheltered harbor on the Papagayo Peninsula. Once under way, the coastline opens into a series of clean headlands and pale beaches as you angle toward the Catalina Islands, positioned just offshore from the Playa Flamingo area. Spend the afternoon snorkeling or diving in gentle coves chosen for the day’s conditions, then continue a short distance to anchor near Flamingo or Potrero for a calm first evening. Dinner is best kept simple and fresh, with the sea still warm and the night arriving softly.

Day 2 - Flamingo Bay to Tamarindo and Playa Grande

15 NM

Cruise south along the Nicoya Peninsula toward Tamarindo’s wide arc of sand, then settle near Playa Grande, gateway to Las Baulas Marine National Park. The day is designed around ease: a late morning swim, a tender ride along the shoreline, and an unhurried lunch at anchor. In season, an evening guided beach visit can be arranged within park regulations, offering a quiet, controlled glimpse of one of the Pacific’s most important nesting areas. Back on board, the night feels calm and private, with the coastline reduced to a dark line and a low hush of surf.

Day 3 - Playa Grande to Samara Bay

50 NM

Today’s passage carries you farther south to Samara, a broad beach set on a gently curved, horseshoe shaped bay. Arrive with time to slow the pace again: a long swim in the shallows, a quiet paddle along the bay’s edge, and an afternoon that feels deliberately unscheduled. Samara’s mood is relaxed but not rustic, ideal for guests who prefer understated coastal life over spectacle. As the light softens, the yacht settles into evening with an easy dinner service and a sense of having moved into a more intimate Costa Rica.

Day 4 - Samara Bay to Cabo Blanco

55 NM

Continue south toward the Nicoya Peninsula’s southern tip, where Cabo Blanco offers a rare sense of protection and history. Established in 1963, it is widely recognized as Costa Rica’s first major protected area, a quiet landmark in the country’s conservation story. Anchor in a calm pocket of water and spend the afternoon between sea and shade: snorkeling close to the rocks, a short guided walk inland, or simply staying on board as the landscape does the work. Evening here feels especially still, with a darker horizon and fewer lights, the kind of setting that invites early nights and slow mornings.

Day 5 - Cabo Blanco to the Gulf of Nicoya

45 NM

Round the peninsula into the Gulf of Nicoya, where the sea softens and the cruising becomes notably smoother. The coastline shifts from open Pacific drama to a quieter network of coves and islands, well suited to a restorative day. Anchor near a protected inlet and let the afternoon unfold gently: reading on deck, a short tender cruise, and a long swim in calmer water. This is a day for subtle luxuries, chilled towels after the sea, a late lunch served without ceremony, and sunset enjoyed in silence rather than celebration.

Day 6 - Gulf of Nicoya to Puntarenas

20 NM

The final morning is a composed approach toward Puntarenas. Breakfast is served on deck as the gulf gradually narrows, offering a last, quiet perspective of Costa Rica’s Pacific from the water. Keep the last hours intentionally unstructured: one final swim if conditions invite it.
