YACHT CHARTER ITINERARY

Sail to Florida Keys

Reef-lined waters, soft mornings, and an easy southern pace.

About This Itinerary

5 Days in the Florida Keys

This five day itinerary runs south from Miami into the Florida Keys, staying close to the marked cruising corridor that parallels the reef. Hawk Channel is the classic route for light draft vessels between Cape Florida and Key West, and it sets a straightforward rhythm for a week that values time on the water over constant repositioning. The route also keeps you inside a landscape that is actively managed and protected. Much of your time will be spent within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, where zoning and preservation areas shape how and where you anchor, snorkel, and explore. A highlight early in the journey is Key Largo’s John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, recognized as the first undersea park in the United States and spanning roughly 70 nautical square miles. It is an ideal entry point for reef time that feels purposeful rather than rushed.

Day 1 - Miami to Key Largo

35 NM

Begin in Biscayne Bay with a calm departure while the city is still quiet. The day is intentionally simple: a steady run south, then an early arrival in Key Largo to settle into the first anchorage without urgency. Late afternoon is reserved for an easy swim or tender time along the mangrove edge, followed by dinner on board as the light fades and the shoreline becomes still.

Day 2 - Key Largo to Islamorada

20 NM

This morning is designed around reef time. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a natural focus, with options ranging from a guided snorkel to a glass bottom style view depending on your preference and conditions. After lunch, cruise on to Islamorada and anchor with enough daylight left to enjoy the water again, or simply stay on deck and let the afternoon pass without agenda.

Day 3 - Islamorada to Marathon

28 NM

A slightly longer run brings you into the Middle Keys. Marathon works well as a practical base with straightforward marina support if you want it, and calm pockets of water nearby when you prefer to stay at anchor. The afternoon is kept open: a swim, a short shore break, and time to reset before the final push toward Key West.

Day 4 - Marathon to Key West

40 NM

Depart with time to pass one of the Keys’ defining landmarks, the Seven Mile Bridge, which links the Middle Keys to the Lower Keys and remains the longest bridge in the island chain. Continue west toward Key West, arriving in the late afternoon when the harbor feels calmer. Evening is best spent simply: a quiet walk through the old streets, then back to the yacht for a low key dinner or a single well chosen reservation ashore.

Day 5 - Key West

10 NM

Keep the final day unstructured. Begin with a slow breakfast and a short harbor cruise if you want one last hour on the water, then allow time for Key West at street level: galleries, a discreet lunch, and an early return to the yacht.
