YACHT CHARTER ITINERARY

Sail to Whitsundays Australia

White sand, protected anchorages, and a quiet island rhythm.

About This Itinerary

4 Days in Australia

This itinerary starts and ends at Hamilton Island Marina, a convenient gateway to the Whitsundays with straightforward access to the island group. From there, the route keeps the distances modest and the days specific: one protected overnight in Cid Harbour, one morning dedicated to Whitehaven and Hill Inlet, and one evening in Nara Inlet on Hook Island. The Whitsundays sit within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, where zoning shapes what you can do in different areas. The plan below assumes you will follow local guidance for moorings, anchoring, and reef etiquette, and it leaves enough flexibility to pick the best bay for the day’s wind.

Day 1 - Hamilton Island to Cid Harbour, Whitsunday Island

18 NM

Depart Hamilton Island and cruise across to Cid Harbour, a reliable first overnight with multiple anchoring options depending on wind direction. Use the afternoon for an easy water session off the yacht, then take the tender ashore for a short walk to Sawmill Beach or along the forest track if you want to stretch your legs. Keep the first evening simple on board and settle in early for a strong start tomorrow.

Day 2 - Cid Harbour to Tongue Bay, Whitehaven Beach, and Hill Inlet

12 NM

Anchor in Tongue Bay in time for the Hill Inlet walk. The lookout gives you a clear view over the shifting sand patterns at the northern end of Whitehaven. After the hike, spend the late morning on Whitehaven Beach, known for sand that is reported at roughly 98 to 99 percent silica. In the afternoon, return to the yacht for lunch, then take a second swim stop off the beach edge or at a nearby reef patch before choosing an overnight anchorage based on comfort and shelter.

Day 3 - Whitehaven Area to Hook Island, Nara Inlet

15 NM

Cruise to Hook Island and enter Nara Inlet for a protected overnight. Plan the afternoon around the Ngaro Cultural Site track, a short walk accessible by boat that leads to caves with rock art and midden sites linked to the Ngaro People. After the walk, return on board and use the last light for snorkeling or a quiet paddle inside the inlet, then stay put for the night with the boat well protected from open water swell.

Day 4 - Hook Island to Hamilton Island

30 NM

Leave Nara Inlet after breakfast and take a slow route back toward Hamilton Island. If conditions suit, stop briefly at a mooring area for one final snorkel before returning to the marina. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and adjacent Queensland marine park generally use complementary zoning, so it is worth confirming the day’s rules for your chosen stop. Arrive back at Hamilton Island Marina mid to late afternoon for an easy disembarkation.
